sharing a calendar without sharing all the details

I would like to share my calendar showing when I am available without sharing
the details of my day. How can I do this without having to set every
appointment as private?

You are mistaken with your premise that other users on an Exchange network
can see the details of your meetings unless you mark them Private. It's
usually quite the opposite: users on your network can see your Free/Busy
data (but no details) UNLESS you GIVE them permission to see more eg
Reviewer level permission.

Check the Default setting by right clicking your Calendar | Properties
|Permissions. If Default is set to None. Then the permissions are set as
described above.

In addition to what Judy said, ensure you don't have the option checked in
your planner options to show calendar details in grid.
