Setup cannot find a Windows 2000 installation to repair

Hi

I have a windows 2000 machine that only boots as far as splash screen (win2k
screen with blue progress bar) and then it restarts itself and repeats the
process.

I can boot up into safe mode and i havent noticed anything out of place in
the registry (admittedly my knowledge of registry's is limited).

I've scanned the hard disk for viruses and nothing is detected.

I tried a Windows 2000 repair using Fast Repair (i dont have an Emergency
Repair Disk) and it gives me the following message.

"Setup cannot find a Windows 2000 installation to repair. Unless you
provide the Emergency Repair disk for the installation you want to repair,
Setup cannot make the repairs."

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hy,

- Have you ever tried a "last known good Boot?" In case you installed new
drivers that do not match the systems expectations.

- The bootlog Option enabled (Press F8 durcing startup), which will generate
a file ntbtlog... After that you boot in securemode an analyze the File.

Let me know whats going on. Sounds intereseting!

- I have tried Last known good configuration but that didnt do anything. No
drivers have been installed recently either.

- ive enabled boot logging and i dont know what to make of it, other than a

Hy,
The did not load... blabla is normal. But with all that stuff in it i think
about your Display drivers.
- Try to boot the system with "Enabled VGA Mode". If that is successfull,
you should check the VGA part. In this mode the display drivers are not
loaded!

Good to know. The "minimal" safe boot will only start the very needed device
drivers. This works! The enabled VGA Option will start without the device
drivers. This fails!
What could create your problem? Net? CD ROm, which is the last loaded device
in the log? Is it an onboard Net? Or PCI?

- To check the Network, you can choose the safeboot option with Networking.
If that fails, you are quite near to the solution. Then You can disable the
onboard network in the BIOS, or pullout the pci-card.

- You can pull out some suspected devices... CD Rom?

it appears that faulty RAM was responsible. I think the problems were two
fold:

1) it screwed up the boot sequence preventing the machine from loading fully.

2) it corrupted the primary partition in someway which prevented Windows
Setup from detecting it.

Mainly the Blue Screen Error come because of the following reason.
1. Hardware Device Driver may have problem , CD ROM, Modem, Etc.
2. RAM may not support
3. Driver Conflict

check the above said points

it may help you.
