Set printer defaults for all users of a shared printer

Actually Windows Server 2003, but there's no newsgroup for printers under
2003, and Windows 2000 is very similar.

We have a shared HP LaserJet 2200 printer. We would like the default
setting to be "Print On Both Sides" whenever a new user comes along and adds
this printer. But it doesn't work that way. Whenever a new user adds the
printer, he/she gets HP's "factory default" settings, which include
single-sided printing.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, not all printer drivers behave perfectly.

What OS is running on the client computers?

Maybe you did this already - this "should" set the default that will become
the user's default when the printer is first connected to a particular
computer.

On the Windows 2003 Print Server computer
1. Open Printers and Faxes
2. Right click on the printer (HP 2200) and select Properties
3. on the General tab, click Printing Prefernces
4. select the Layout tab
5. in the Print on Both Sides frame, select Flip on Long Edge

If you right click on the printer and select Printing Preferences instead,
this sets the printing preferences for the user currently logged on at the
server, not the default for other users connecting to that printer.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the difference. I'll try it. The clients run XP.

Alas, this didn't work. When a user comes along and adds the shared
printer, they still get Factory Defaults (which is single-sided), though "AI
Center Defaults" (which I created) is on their menu of default sets.

Got it. I had to go to the Advanced tab, Printing Defaults, and then go
into the preferences from there.
