Service Pack 2 update to Win XP Pro runs and runs and runs.......

I have never had one second of problem with my PC until a couple of
days ago when I installed Service Pack 2 on my Acer notebook. Now,
whenever I try to turn off my PC I get a prompt: "click Turn Off to
install important updates". If I then click on "Turn Off", I get a
message telling me that XP is installing update 1 or 1, "do not turn
off the PC or disconnect from power". At that point the keyboard is no
longer usable (no access to Windows Task Manager). Flashing dots
indicate that some sort of process is running, and alternating
messages appear on the screen ("updating", don't turn it off").

I have let it process like this for several hours, but it NEVER
ends!. Only light disk activity is indicated (a flash ever 5-10
seconds). The only way I can get back into my PC is to disconnect the
power and let the battery run dead (that takes about an hour in
itself). I can then reconnect to power, re-boot, and access my PC, but
I keep getting the afore-mentioned prompt whenever I shut down
windows. This PC is only 3 months old, and I don't have much on it
except for some photo files and some Word docs. What could Windows be
possibly doing??? Should I try to back-out SP2 and disable my Windows
Auto-update?

Hi,

It may be worth running the windows update manually to determine which
update is causing you problems.
As far as letting the battery run flat, you should be able to just hold the
power button down for 3-4 seconds to force the notebook to turn off.

Hope this helps
