Fascinating stuff! Sounds like the start of an Indiana Jones film or something...

The base was abandoned when the scientists stationed there were poisoned by polar bear meat in 1944 and had to be rescued by a German U-boat.

Oh dear, doesn't sound pleasant!

Shame there are no photos of it - the video just seems to show stock photos. Just imagine stumbling across something like that :eek:.

Wikipedia:

During World War II the Germans established an ill-fated meteorological station on the island, called Schatzgräber ("Treasure Hunter"). Most of the members were stricken with trichinosis after eating raw polar bear meat. The survivors were removed and the project abandoned.

A major no-no to eat undercooked bear meat (polar or OTHERWISE).

Anyone follow the Nazi Gold train thing a bit back? I was really hoping that would turn out to be something interesting!
