Give this a shot then.
%windir% = C:WINDOWS if Windows is installed on the C: drive.
I have no
idea about your machine. Paste %windir% into Start | Run
click OK and see
what opens.
Try this.
1. Go to C:Windowssrchasst or %windir%srchasst and
delete everything
that you can.
2. Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...
regsvr32 /u %windir%srchasstsrchui.dll
You will see a message like this if successful...
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllUnregisterServer in C:WINDOWSsrchasstsrchui.dll
succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
3. Go to C:WindowsInf or %windir%Inf right click
srchasst.inf and
click install.

Search - Doesn't Work
From the description it sounds like he is having the same
problem that
I am, and if so this doesn't help. Mine has been broken since around
the time I loaded SP2 (about a year ago), but I can't say if that was
causal since I so rarely search for files. It may have been broken
before that and I simply didn't notice it.
I've tried every tip, trick, and registry hack I could find and nothing
has worked. I get the search box and type in my criteria, but when I
click "Search Now" nothing happens at all. Even using * as the criteria
does nothing. It's as if that button is purely decorative with no
actual code behind it. I've pretty well given up, but if you have any
other suggestions (short of an OS rebuild), I'm certainly game.
