SCANPST = Fatal Error: 80040900

S

Spencer

Trying to scan customer's broken PST file. It is about 1.9
Gigs large. Scanpst.exe simply won't fix it - it bombs out
every time (6 tries) at what appears to be the same spot
over and over during Phase 4 of 8. The error message at
the end says "Fatal Error: 80040900", but I can't seem to
find a solution anywhere online.
Thanks.

You cannot use scanpst.exe against a file of that size. See this page for
some help:

Hi,

The Fatal Error: 80040900 implies the pst file corruption. Also Scanpst.exe utility is not able to fix the pst file which has the size larger than 2 GB. As the size of your file is about 1.9 GB then it is possible that scanpst.exe is not able to repair the pst file. In such a case you can use a third party tool to repair the pst file. For more help you can see this -

Scanpst generates Fatal Error:80040900 when it fails to fix damaged or corrupted Outlook PST file. Hence you can no more access the PST file unless you fix Scanpst=Fatal Error:80040900. The root cause of this error is oversized PST file. You can use the inbuilt PST split tool to split the oversized PST file. After that Outlook will consider each file as seperate one. If this does not fix the error then it might be possible that your PST file is damaged. You can repair the damaged PST file using a third party Outlook PST tool.
Hope this will resolve the error problem and enables you to access the PST file again.
