"Safely Remove Hardware" Disappears from Notification Area

I have a couple of hardware items that normally cause the "Safely Remove
Hardware" icon to appear - the removable disk drive on my Epson Stylus 925
(for CF/Smart Media) and my iPod. However, the icon doesn't always appear,
even after plugging in the iPod.

Any thoughts as to what would make this disappear, and how to make it show
up when it should? FYI, the printer is always on, and the drive appears
under "My Computer" as a removable media drive.

You could be suffering from disappearing icons in the Notification Area.
Try KB article 321213. Have a peep at KB 283084 too.
