Safe to delete files in Installer directory???

There is an enormous number of Installer files (*.msi) in the
C:\Windows\Installer directory. These are using up hundreds of megabytes of
space. Why are these saved after installing software??? Is it safe to delete
all of the files in the Installer directory??? Are these required to
un-install the software later?
