RTM Vista and Nero 7

Can somebody with the RTM release (the real one, not illegal download!)
check whether installing Nero 7 causes the 'rundll32' and 'COM Surrogate'
errors previously mentioned on this newsgroup?

(Browse to a folder containing MPEG files using Explorer, and see if the
error occurs with Thumbnail views)

Thanks!

you need nero 7.5.7 for nero to work with Vista RTM and I have done that
succesfully.

I know Nero 7.5.7.0 will install on RC2, I've used it. Can you try browsing
to a folder containing MPEG1/MPEG2 files (possibly .AVI as well), and see if
you get the error 'Windows Host Processes (rundll32.exe) has stopped
working' ? Make sure the folder view is set to icons rather than list or
details view.

Thanks

Oh well, as Vista is RTM it's upto the Nero people to find a fix
ASAP.

I still have the error as well.

However, after doing a little more digging on the net and with my
setup I'm not entirely sure it's all Neros fault.

There is obviously an issue, but I found it happens without Nero if
you have a Divx codec installed. I'm starting to believe that the
codec Nero uses is flawed, so Nero will have to get an updated codec
that works properly with Vista for their next release.

For now, I've simply enabled the setting in Explorer to "Always show
icons, never thumbnails" and I don't get the errors. This setting is
in Explorer under Organize menu, Folder and search options, View tab,
Advanced settings. It should be the first item in the list.

All CD/DVD functions in Nero (that I've tested so far) work fine, and
on the main Nero page they're boldly advertising Vista compatibility,
so I expect Ahead is not in a rush and will post an updated release
next month or so.

That will fix the problem, but you also lose thumbnails of pictures when
that option is selected

Yes, the Nero software itself is great and works fine, they just need to
sort out this little bug!

Yest is is causing those problems. I have version 757 and it still causes
those issues.

Run DirectShow Filter Manager, and set the merit to "00200000" for all codecs
that start "Nero".

It's not a problem with Vista, but with the Nero MSI package. When a minimal
install is done, it part installs the codecs, which causes the errors you're
seeing when trying to thumbnail DivX video clips - as it didn't install the
codec!

Ahead need to fix the MSI.

You can get DirectShow filter manager here:

I don't believe that is accurate, since I did a typical install and I
still had the same COM surrogate errors. I also tried custom and
complete, and all installations gave me the same errors.

Note that each new install was with a new and clean install of Vista
(spare drive), not restores or uninstalls of Nero.
Ahead need to fix the MSI.

I think it's a problem with the codec itself, not just the installer.

Still it needs to be corrected and Ahead has "Vista compatible"
splashed all over their main page, which it is not.

This is an easy fix..uninstall any divx or xvid codecs..install
ffdshow...voila..all fixed

No dice. I already have FFDShow codec pack installed. Still have the run 32
error. It was fine before Nero, all crapped up after Nero. My guess would be
that the problem is Nero.

Except I don't have any DivX clips, all mine are MPEG or MOV. It's only
giving the error on MPEG files

Yeah it still does it. I switched to Roxio 9.
No problems.

Yes, it causes the same issue with MPEG's as well. Just do as I said in the
original message, and your problems will go away.

Alternatively perform a full install, with all options and then run all the
software once, to force registration of all the codecs. Again, it's down to
poor packaging by Ahead.
