rstrui.exe- Entry Point Not Found

I am experiencing problems with computer with XP Home. I cannot do a system
restore without getting error
rstrui.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be
located in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll

I cannot normally restart the computer but can get into Safe Mode and select
the item about last normally started and then bring up the normal start-up.

I was able to do sfc /scannow at command prompt and was asked for the
Windows CD which I inserted and ended up doing an upgrade (dirty install?).
I had problem with the installation.

I got error:
unregmp2.exe Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library
MSDART.DLL
I was able to kill the unregmp2.exe with taskmgr.exe (Kelly's Korner) but I
did not find the sr.inf file in the C:Windows but it was in the C:I386. Do I
need to reinstall it in those places from the CD?

At least I can access the CD's which I could not earlier today. But how do I
fix the two errors and establish a restore point and get Windows to start up
normally without having to get into Safe Mode first?

Any suggestions please? Thanks!
Susan

Hi,

The sr.inf file is under C:\Windows\Inf, not C:\Windows - make sure that you
have folder options/view set to see hidden and system folders.

Not sure I'm exactly following but the MSDART.DLL error if you got rid
of it during an upgrade install you're still probably having problems
afterward and you need to install MDAC
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&displaylang=en
to resolve that. I'd be supprised if the origional rstrui.exe wasn't
resolved during hte upgrade but it doens't really matter, an upgrade
install deletes all your restore points any way. Those entry point
errors can have alot to do with having bad file versions and can be
caused by an upgrade install so you're best to install all the latest
updates

I have tried to follow the instructions below, but I cannot find "eap" or
"ppp", I did a find on rasman but got
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Tracing\RASMAN.
This does not jive with the instructions below so I don't want to do
anything until I am clear about this.

Any suggestions please?

Log in as a user that has System Admin capabilities. Start, Run, Regedit.
Find HKLM\system\Current Control Set\services\rasman\ppp\eap.
Export the node by selecting, File, Export. (This creates a backup in case
of screw-up. If you don't know how to import, maybe you shouldn't be doing
this.) Once this is done, under EAP is a folder/key 25. Delete it. Also
delete folder/key 26. (These are the keys for the connection wizard. MS
will not tell you how to modify the keys for the desired result, you must
delete them. Or run this edit.

You may be right but the computer with problems cannot connect to the
Internet. The download requires validation of Windows although I do know it
is a valid copy because I used it to do the reinstall.

Guess I am in a pickle. I can install the file from the CD but then I need
to restart. I click "Yes" but the computer will not normally restart. I have
to go into Safe Mode and restart pointing to the last normal startup. So
that means that my changes do not take effect. Right?

I formated the HD and reinstalled Windows XP Home from the CD. Everything
seems fine now.
