Windows XP RPC Server unavailable

Can anybody help me. My PC was fine but now I cannot connect to the internet. I use broadband but I just keep getting a message 'searching for IP address'
i rang the helpline and this is what happened

Run - ipconfig = everything was blank
Run - ipconfig/renew = RPC Server unavailable
Run - service.msc (i think) RPC server says it has started.

Helpline now just says its a 'windows problem' but did not seem to be able to tell me how to sort it out!!!

I am running Win XP home with service pack 2
my network adapter is a realtek (something)

Help!!

can you do a system restore to before it happened ?

Unfortunatley no. Everytime I try a system restore it appears to complete but right at the very end I get a message that system restore was unsuccessful

We need a little more information on your system ...

who is your ISP?
What Modem are you using?
How is your PC conected to the Modem? USB or Ethernet?

If you download, install and run Everest Home Edition it will give all the information on your system, especially on the Network card.

My ISP is Telewest, my modem is a surfboard cable modem, connection is ethernet
