Restoring password protected files after w32lovsen worm

M

Mechie

I had the worm on my computer today and my boyfriend and
I got rid of it but before we did get rid of it, we
reinstalled windows xp again and all of the files that I
had under my old user name was password protected and now
I can't access them and I don't want to do a system
restore for fear of bringing back that nasty virus, what
should I do, if anything to get my files back. Very
important that I have them. Note: I was not able to
backup anything because of the virus, I could not stay
logged on long enough before to back up anything to a
disk, kept shutting me down. The files are still on my
computer and I was wondering how to gain access to them.
Pls help.

Mechie;
To regain access to your files, Take Ownership:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

For the Trojan issue, check these to make sure it is completely gone.
Anything less and it still may be there.
DISCONNECT the subject computer from any network IMMEDIATELY.

Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY:

VERY IMPORTANT to repair, closing ports is NOT enough.
Download the patch from the Windows Catalog.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166
You want: 823980
You may need to do this at an uninfected computer and burn to CD or
save on floppy.

This is the IMPORTANT fix by Ron Martell:

After this is resolved prevent similar occurrences by installing ALL
Critical Updates from Windows Update.
Keep antivirus up to date and run at least weekly.
Install or enable a firewall.
