removing 'password never expires' checkmark

We have several users whos have the checkmark set in the
account option: password never expires. The issue is
while these users were logged onto the domain, we removed
this check mark. As soon as the checkmark was removed,
users could no longer access domain resources, they had
to reboot and enter a new password. I have been searching
for something on this for the past two days but have
found nothing. I'm not sure if this is a bug or by design
by Microsoft. Has anyone else seen this? We are on 2000
AD and 2000 professional. thanks.

By design.

Presumably, the password was expired (or non-existent) so removing the
check box made it expired, requiring a new password.
