Remote Assitance works, Remote Desktop doesn't

I have a problem with Remote Desktop..

I have a host machine configured to allow both Remote Assitance and
Remote desktop. This machine is connected to the internet via NTL ISP
(no firewall/router).

From a client machine, connected to the internet, I can connect and
access the host if I use the Remote Assistance but when I try to
access using the IP address in Remote Desktop I can't get a
connection. I also can't ping the host machine.

Any help in solving this problem would be appreciated.

If you can't ping the target machine or access the machine with Remote Desktop then it sounds like
the ICF is enabled. Either disable ICF, a very bad idea if the PC is connected directly to the
public internet, or forward/open TCP Port 3389 through the ICF for Remote Desktop...The later option
is the option of choice...

Note there is already a Remote Desktop selection available in the ICF. Simply check the checkbox
besides Remote Desktop and click on Ok...See Item 6 at the bottom of this page...

Al,

Thanks for the info. At first I thought it was the ICF. I turned it
off ant tried it without the ICF and still had the same problem. I
would not leave ICF turned off permanently but just did it to try and
see if it resolved the problem. I'll check through the link and see if
it gets me any further.

What is the difference between the way that Remote Assitance and
Remote Desktop work? Why does the first work and not the second? This
is what I don't understand.

I have just double checked and the situation is as follows:

On the machine I am trying to connect to the XP firewall is enabled
and the Remote Desktop port is enabled. I can get in via Remote
assitance but the Remote Desktop, using the IP address (also confirmed
using ipconfig) is blocked. I have also tried "pinging" and that
doesn't work either.

Does anyone have any ideas or things to try?

Tahir.
