Reinstall Win2K

Matthew

Dear All,

This is a bit of an emergency. My Windows 2000 Pro box
will no longer boot, it gets to the colour Win2k splash
screen, shows a blue screen for a split second and then
reboots. The blue screen says something about a file
cannot be found but it is gone so quickly there is no
time to read it fully.

I have booted from the original 2K CD and attempted to
Repair the installation, of course I don't have the
emergency repair floppy, so I try fast repair - the
machine claims that it cannot find an installation of
Windows.

I have also tried reinstalling from the CD but I get a
warning to say that I will loose all my current Windows
settings and more importantly the 'My Documents' folder.

I could backup everything to another Hard Disk, reinstall
Win2K on the original install all the software and then
copy my data back across. I just wonder if there is an
easier way of fixing this problem, so I don't have to
spend all weekend installing software.

Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

TIA

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

You can put down a parallel installation (a installation into another
directory other then \WINNT - \WINDOWS and leave the file system intact).
This will give you a working installation to troubleshoot your production
installation. If we can read the event logs of the production installation
and find out what files are missing you can copy them over from the parallel
installation to the production installation. Just remember to bring the
paralell installation up to the same Service Pack level that your production
installation previously was

Hi Kevin,

Thanks very much for that advice.

Where do I find the log files of the production
installation?

If/when I get the orginal \WINNT version working can I
then delete the \WINDOWS install?

Thanks again

Kevin,

As well as needing to know where the log files are
located I would also like to know how I can check the SP
version of the production install. It is not my machine,
the owner says thay have all the updates and it was set
to automatically download and install, does this mean
that SP4 is installed or SP3 with a load of updates?

Thanks again
