Recover data from .pst file

Is there any way to recover any data from a corrupted .pst file? Is there
anyway to open it & look at the information?
I'm running Outlook 2002 on a Windows XP (Dell) computer. I began having
problems with Outlook not shutting down or opening correctly. I downloaded
Service Pack 3. Outlook seemed to work for a couple of days but then it
stopped working completely - could not access folders, contacts, etc. I have
created a new .pst file & Outlook is now working. I am just wondering if
there is any way to recover any of the old e-mails, tasks, calendar, contacts.
I tried running scanpst.exe - but it could not run. I can't remember the
exact error message but I think it was something about the .pst file being
corrupt.
I did a chkdsk - didn't find any problems.
I did a detect & repair - didn't help.
I'm just wondering if there is any chance to recover any of the data. Also,
I'm wondering about backing up the data. Do I just do a weekly or monthly
backup of the .pst file and is that all I need to back up.
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

If this is truly a problem with the PST you may want
to click on over to SLIPSTIC site and read up on
corrupt PST's and PST's that have become larger
than appx. 1.86mb. Look for information on both
the SCANPST tool and the PST2GB tool:
