Question about ghosting/cloning XP on BartPE?

I

I want to ghost a Dell laptop hard drive running XP to a Dell desktop
hard drive using BartPE. Is this possible eventhough these are two
different hardware? I know you can clone hard drives from the same type
of machines to another, but not sure about this. Thanks.

Probably have to run a repair installation with the Windows XP CD..

However - know that you are not allowed to (in accordance with the OEM End
User License Agreement that came with Windows XP pre-installed on the Dell)
do what you are trying to do.

I have a computer running and working fine with an application
installed already that works fine. I just want to clone the hard drive
to another computer(different type) 's hard drive to do the same thing.
Basically two different machines with the same setup/look. I don't
want to have to manually install XP and this app again since it is a
complicated app to configure and setup. Thanks.

I did not ask for an excuse on why you were attempting to do it - just
letting you know that according to the strict guidelines of the OEM End-User
License Agreement - you may not transfer that license/copy of Windows XP
from one machine to another under any circumstances.

As for the technicals of how to fix a ghosted system after going from one
hardware platform to another - I gave you that - a repair installation using
your original Windows XP installation media. Realizing you may have never
done this before:

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

What specific application could possibly be 'so complicated'?

Managing several thousand machines with multiple dozens of applications on
them is what many of the people here (who choose to help others) do...
Perhaps if you asked for assistance - we could give you a simpler solution
for this application.

One thing about the newsgroups - you can count on "information" - some true,
some not too true and some not at all true. BartPE in it's native form does
not provide for "ghosting" unless in the creation of the CD provisions for
"ghosting" were added.

Transferring an "image" from one computer to another may at best be
problematic - risk is up to the riskee (any such word?)

I have an additional license, so no problem regarding that. It is
actually a POS system software. Thanks for the info. I'll try the
repair.

Yes, my BARTPE has ghost included. It comes with it when you use PE
Builder to make it.

Additional license does not matter unless that license/CD is what you will
be doing the repair with.
That way you convert the new ghosted system to the new license in the
processof doing the repair install.

Also - something else to note - if these systems will bo on the same
network - possibly connecting to the same things - you will want to change
the name/SID of the machine beofre connecting them to said same network -
especially if they are not in a domain.

If they are in a domain - trhat brings up a whole different issue with
ghosting/imaging.

True, and not true....
Ghost is a Symantec application and is *not* free.

See:
---
Plugin included with PE Builder, but the user needs to buy the program:
- Ghost v8.0 by Symantec.
- Nero Burning Rom by Ahead Software.

And the associated link:

Good Luck!

It doesn't matter how many licenses you have. The same installation with
the same license key can't be on two different systems. It's a violation of
the EULA. You'll need to change the license key on the second installation.
