Programs take a long time to start in XP Pro

After starting my CPU with Windows XP Pro, I double-click on my Outlook
icon, or any other program icon for that matter, and it takes anywhere from
1-6 minutes for the program to start.

Any ideas on why this is?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

What do you expect from your 1990 vintage 286 computer? Oh you don't have
one of those. Well, what DO you have in the way of hardware? It may
influence peoples answers to you!

Here is the info!:

Hardware/Software:

* 2.4Ghz P4
* 80GB HD...72GB space left
* 512MB memory
* CD-RW
* 3.5" floppy
* 250MB ZIP
* No external hardware
* Office XP Pro
* WinXP Pro
* Photoshop 7
* Illustrator 10
* Quark 6
* PageMaker 7
* NAV 2003
* Ad-Aware Pro 6.0

Have not loaded new software or added new hardware in a couple of months.
Use all software and hardware on a frequent basis. I do a virus scan ever
day. I download virus definitions every day. I use Ad-Aware every day. I
download Ad-Aware updates every day.

If your computer has been up-and-running for a while, I would suggest that
you delete all the files in your c:\windows\prefetch folder. Doing so, on a
monthly basis, speeds up my computer tremendously.

Also, make certain that there are no disks in the Zip drive or the CD drive
while booting. This can cause severe slow downs as each disk is read during
the boot.

Thanks for the info...I do not keep ZIP's, CD's or 3.5's in the machine when
booting up or down. I will take a look at the prefetch folder and see what
happens

Thx,

Jason

Cleaning Prefetch did not do anything for the challenge that I have. My
system has always started quickly. The software applications are still
opening very very slowly. One more not of interese is that once that the
applications do open, there is no problems in closing or opening afterwards.
Seems like it is all taking place in the first 10-15 minutes that the system
is logged in.

Thx,

Jason

Found that "Internet Connection Sharing" was turned on in the Advanced Tab
of the Properties dialog box for my ISP Dial-Up Connection. I have no other
computers connected to mine. After removing this option, my system is back
to normal!

Thanks for all the suggestions,

Jason
