PROCESSOR CHOICES QUESTION FOR THE EXPERTS...

Who Dat?

Hi Guys,

I am in the process of building my first pc or at the very least
getting the parts together. This pc will not be for gaming but more
for multi-tasking video editing. I have 2 choices so far recommended
to me. I will list them below. Please give me your opinion on these
setups and of course I would prefer an opinion not biased towards AMD
or INTEL. I know that is probably going to be hard any please feel
free to give all your opinions. Here goes...

INTEL D945PSNLK DDR2 S775ATX GB
INTEL BX830 DUALCORE 3.0 S775
CENTON 2GB DC KIT DDR2 677MHZ

OR

ABIT AN8 SLI NF4 SLI S939 ATX
AMD ATHLON 64 X2 3800+ DC S939 BX
KINGSTON 2GB PC3200 DDR DC KIT

I am not a diehard Intel or AMD guy so I really dont care which I go
for just want to hear from the experts on their personal feelings
towards these setups. I have not had a new pc in quite some time so I
figures this time I would try to go near or towards the top. Thanks
for all the help in advance.

There are a few points you should clarify or mention before getting valuable
advice.
- Which editing software are you using?
- Do you plan to purchase some "advanced" video editing card? Which one?
- What do you understand by "multitasking" ? Performing 2 video tasks on the
same computer, or doing video editing plus another task like office or
internet? Your answer here should also impact on your hard disc drives
configuration.
You should also check if your editing software is "multicore ready".

Anyways, if you plan real multitasking, you should certainly go for Intel
dualcore.

I found a site that does a fairly good job of really testing out
comparisons. Tell me what you guys think. Here it goes.

I'm still convinced Who Dat? meant the AMD lol. Intel has even admitted to
rushing and screwing up their dual core offerings lol.

also check this out it actually compares the 2 processors and gives a
clear winner...

It does seem to indicate a winner. However, my recent experience causes me
to favor Intel. I don't think at today's processing speeds the AMD edge
means much. I put together a new AMD 64-bit 3200+/Abit (??) machine to be
my new audio and video editing machine. I've ended up continuing to use my
slightly older Intel P4 2.4 gHz/Asus box as my editing machine and
relegating the new one to other office/Internet computing duties. Turns out
that my Digital Audio Labs CardDeluxe would not work in the AMD based
machine in spite of assurances from Abit and Digital Audio Labs that it
should. So, I pulled off the shelf an Echo Gina 96. Same story. Both
caused the AMD machine to crash after playing an audio file for about 10
seconds. I spent maybe 10 hours trying to track down this seeming anomily
that should not be happening before giving up. My time was worth more than
the computer at that point. Sure, this is an isolated case. Shouldn't have
happened. But, it did. Now, I lean heavily toward Intel for compatibility.

There is no reason to believe "Intel" or "AMD" had anything
to do with the compatibility. It could as easily have
happened the other way 'round that the Intel box crashed on
the audio. Generally one would look at the DirectX, audio
driver, chipset driver, and other misc windows flaws and
bugs to pin down the mechanism. Until one knows exactly WHY
there was a problem it is not useful to draw vague
references to the CPU being somehow related to audio
crashes.

Apart from perhaps when you are processing a large multimedia job 30 minute
job and the AMD takes 5 minutes less due to its 15% performace boost!

You are blaming the processor for software or motherboard problems!

That wasn't my intention. My comment, plain and simple, was that an AMD
system didn't work with a couple of higher end sound cards that work
perfectly in comparable Intel systems. I spent a lot of time with both the
motherboard manufacturer and sound card manufacturers. The problem, which
according to all parties shouldn't have existed, was never uncovered. I
have other AMD based computers in office-type applications that work great.
I have talked with people who use AMD based systems for video and audio
editing successfully. I remain dissappointed that the computer I purchased
didn't work with the hardware I had and no test offered by motherboard
manufacturer or card manufacturer could uncover the problem. That's all.

After careful consideration... I really like the AMD setup better.
