processes in Task manager Windows 2000

I'm new to Windows 2000. In Windows 98 you could go to
msconfig and shut down some background processes. How is
that done in Windows 2000? Is it in the Task
mmmmmmmanager...there are so many processes...which ones
are essential
Thanks for any light on this issue. My computer is super
slow and I think there may be too many things running in
the background.
appreciate any help.

If you are more familiar with msconfig you can copy it from an XP install
and it will run on W2k, otherwise it is taskmanager
