First let me say I have Windows xp service pack 2.I have IE 7 installed and it keeps closing down. I get this error message:

documentsandsettings/manny1/locals1/e361_appcompat.txt

Anybody has a clue what is it? Spyware or a virus or what and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Manny

appcompat.txt is NOT an error, it is a reporting file used when uploading error reports to Microsoft.

You’ve seen the message asking you if you would like to ... “report this error to Microsoft?” ... appcompat.txt is the file that is uploaded if you say yes. Simply allow windows to report the error to Microsoft, if it asks you to, and forget about appcompat.txt. Unless you’re technical enough to understand what’s inside of it, it will not help you. ;)

What were you doing when the "error" occured ?

The problem could be due to a bug in an application, a problem with your machine, a bug in Windows, a security issue, or any number of other things. Just saying “it’s appcompat.txt” tells you exactly nothing about the problem.

Hi muckshifter. Yes, it ask me to send it to MS or not send it. I wasnt doing anything special when I go that error. I think I was just updating computer (KBS and Service Pack) It is just annoying that message, and it is not the first time i get it. I got three times before and the I had to format the OS. I am doing something browsing 3 pages at the same time and boom everything closes down when I want to close one everything is out. Did you read the xml code?

I am not interested in getting that for other applications like yahoo IM or Real Player. Can I get rid of the temp files and the appcomp.txt file on the temp folder names I dont what . Any other suggestion how to fix this?

No, I did not "read" the err, gobbledygook in your second post ... MS techs like to read that stuff ... next time it happens, send off the error report, you never know, you may get an answer. ;)

At the moment, without more information on what your PC is & software you run, I cannot help.

If you run XP, may I suggest turning off "automatic restart" when an error occurs ... I'm better at reading BSOD (blue screen of death) than error log files. :thumb:

to turn of auto-restart (XP) ...
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
Clear (un-tick) the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Problems with IE explorer

I am not quite sure if I sent the error to MS, either way I booted up my computer today. Try to access Juno and I find something interesting. It says the software generated and error and need to be uninstall. I try Netzero ( I use dial up). Yes it gets me to the Internet. I found that I am using 100% cpu time. I go to the taskbar I found a process called emproxy.exe that uses most of the time. I went to the hidden temp file and I deleted the folder and the txt that caused that problem. I still get the same log or txt file. I want to close on the x to close explorer. I get IE generated and error and if you want to send to MS u can. I didnt send, I ve checked and it shows the same.

I am running a toshiba satellite 2415-S205. I ve isntalled xp home service pack 1 doing a clean installation deleting the entire partition. I ve just copy the data that i ve saved. I am going to try what you suggest.

I'm sorry, you are loosing me ... you did a complete re-install ??

Have you got a "real" XP CD ?

Do not install MaCrapie ... well, not until you have completed all the updates from MS update site including SP2, no need for SP1 ... do not install anything else, not even IE7

Yes I installed an ORIGINAL (not pirateded) copy from Microsoft. I haven't reinstalled the OS. I got this problem before so my computer didnt work well with anybrowser. Firefox kept closing down. IE worked so so and the only one that it worked was netscape but I got the compatibility issue too. A friend of mine told me it was syware and my computer was so slow so i install the OS again from an original copy ( that was like a week ago). I do the whole pach for service pack 1 working fine. I get to service 2 and i get this problems. I get the that appcomp.txt problem again.

Yes I ve installed Mcaffee while I was installing the paches for pack 1 and pack 2 and kept telling the registry was modify if i wanted to allowed and i said yes.

The only thing i have done since i got the problem was to go to temp file folder and delete that file and do what you told on me the system -advanced tab -Startup and Recovery and unclick the box automatically restart.

OK, something is not right here ...

You may well need to do another "clean" install as I really do not know what you have done or not. Not you personally, but the way you are installing.

Do not use MaCrapie ... I call it that for good reason, it's crap.

One reason no-one should install any AV program before any updates is simply to make sure those AV programs do not "stop" or interferer with the updates ... MS recommend, and I agree daft as it may sound, to actually turn off your AV programs before installing any updates. You will not get a "Virus" from going to MS Update Site.

1. Clean install XP using the XP CD ... it will allow you to delete any partitions.
2. Go to MS Update site and get the 80-100 updates ... sorry, but it will take some time and a few reboots, but repeat the procedure until there are no more updates.

If you then have "problems" and this is before anything else is ever installed, then you have a problem with your PC & that word compatibility.

Have you got more than the original 256 ram on that Tosh' ... I hope so. ;)

I guess I will have to do what you tell me or keep running it like that. I dont know how many times can u install XP (original cd). Last time I had to call in to activate by the phone because it didnt take the cd key number. I think I installed Win XP Home edition (2002) service pack 1 cd at least 3 times.

Yeap the computer has lake 1 GB of RAM.

If you dont know nothing else to fix then I will get this as final answer i guess. Just letting know that XP comes with IE already installed. I dont know what is worse not to have the service pack and updates or getting this problem. Maybe u are right is a problem of the PC. I just I want to make sure is not spyware or something else.

Yep, had that "hiccup" re-installing XP on numerous occasions also, not a problem really.

I don't even have SP1 on my original XP, hence the time taken to get nearly 100 updates, including SP2 ... SP2 is essential.

Not much more I can say to help really.
