Problems opening pdf and other attachments

When I get sent a pdf, doc or similar it seems I have to save it first to my
hard disk b4 I can open it. If I try and open it within mail it gives me the
file not associated with program error.

However the file clearly opens in general running.

Any help?

....also how do I get the auto empty deleted items on exit? can't find him
anywhere.

It is always a better practice to save the attachment first.
Some people have opened a Word attachment, spent hours
editing it, then lost all the edits when closing the mail program.
That said, look in Tools, Options, Security, uncheck "Do not
allow attachments..."

To auto-purge Deleted Items on exit, see Tools, Options,
Advanced, Maintenance.

tried that but still no success - found the auto purge though!

Any other suggestions - I have narrowed it down to just docs and pdf so far.

Some antivirus programs won't allow access to attachments.

hmmm still no luck - pretty confident it is not the antivirus.
