Problems Connecting to Printer Via Bluetooth

Help! I'm trying to connect my Dell laptop to my Canon Pixma MP500 by putting
a bluetooth adapter in the printer's USB port. The printer is supposed to be
able to connect via Bluetooth when you do this, but the screen keeps
registering an error message saying "incompatible device detected. remove the
device." Is there something I should know about different kinds of Bluetooth
adapters? Not surprisingly, the computer does not detect the printer so
far...

What do I need to do??

I forgot to mention that the Bluetooth adapter I bought (a generic) is v1.2,
which is the same as the Bluetooth Unit sold by Canon specifically for this
printer...
