Problem with Trend Micro Internet Security

Chris

I have been accessing the internet with no problems with my Broadband
Internet Connection. I had been using PC-Cillin 2002 as my virus protection
and Sygate Personal Firewall, but wanted to update to Trend Micro's Internet
Security product. I uninstalled PC-cillin as advised and installed the new
software without any problems. However when I try to access the internet,
whilst I am still able to make a connection as usual, I am unable to browse
any web pages, download email etc. I have looked at all obvious settings. I
have prevented Sygate Firewall from loading just to rule out any impact that
was having. I have looked at the settings in Trend Micro and all seems okay,
such as url filter being turned off and the firewall just to test and still
I am unable to browse pages. Anyhow. I uninstall the product and immediately
I can access the web again, so something within the software is causing the
problem. Yet I have no idea what it is. Does anyone have any idea what I can
try. This is on a Windows XP machine.

PC-cillin Internet Security includes a personal firewall... If I had to
hazard a guess I'd say it's conflicting with Sygate. Simply disabling
Sygate may not remove the potential for conflict. Both products interact
with Windows XPs network protocols at very low level. Your best bet is
to install Sygate and see what happens.

Pc-cillin's firewall wont work along side sygate firewall, to get around this, disable the
pc-cillin firewall service :

Right click my computer, select 'Manage' from the menu and from computer managment, select
services.

Look down the list and find 'Trend Micro Personal Firewall' double left click it and
disable the service and stop it.

Sygate will now work fine.

I forgot to mention that even with the trend micro service disabled, you can still use the
'Emergency lock' option on pc-cillin to stop network and intert traffic, if you do use it
however, you will need to reboot the pc to access the internet again.

Thanks very much Martin.

I have now got the software to work. I actually uninstalled the Sygate
Personal Firewall in the end rather than just not loading it up at startup
and then when I installed the Trend Micro Internet Security software, it
worked without problem.

I assume I'll be able to reload on Sygate and use that as my firewall if I
stop the service you mention in Services. Although maybe the Trend Micro
Firewall will be okay.

Thanks for your help though.

Your welcome :)

Trend firewall is ok but it lacks many of the features of sygate and it doesnt tell you
what is accessing the internet and the rules are sort of hard wired in. It also has a
tendency to stop traffic for no reason and you either have stop the service and start it
again or do a reboot.( Its also a pain to run a home network with any stability ) After
running Sygate and Pc-cillin together for just on 6 weeks I have had no problems.

I think I will reload on Sygate Firewall and stop the Trend Micro one via
the services menu as you mentioned.

Hopefully without problem, as I'd prefer Sygate as my software firewall in
all honesty.
