Problem with audio controls after USB headset installed

A

Alastair M

Using XP home. I installed a basic Logitech USB headset, since then wierd
behaviour as follows:

- When I restart, Windows has reset the master volume control to zero
(minimum volume) and Master Volume -> Wave advanced setting is set to mute.

- The effect of the above is that Windows sounds (startup, shutdown, alerts,
etc) do not work and music tracks do not play.

- I can manually reset these settings and save, but when I next shut-down
and restart Windows has again reset the controls as above (min volume, wave
muted).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Alastair

Only suggestion I can think of is make sure your drivers are up to
date for the headset.

I've had issues with USB headsets before, but it's usually after I
disconnect them. If the driver update doesn't work, I have no idea.
Check with Logitech.

For what it's worth, I'm puzzling over the same problem. But my problem is
unrelated to headsets. As best I can figure, it started after I downloaded a
demo version of Total Recorder from http://www.highcriteria.com/.

I've been looking at the Total Recorder Options settings, but can find
nothing obvious that would explain the problem. But sure enough, every time
I start up my PC, the master volume and the Line In volume have been set to
minimum.

You need to check the audio settings in Control Panel --> Sound and
Audio Device "applet" --> Audio tab and change the Sound playback
"default device." It seems that the USB audio device is set as the
default device incorrectly.

I am having the same problem as Ken--have been for several months. I also
have Total Recorder installed. The volume icon never appears in the icon bar
any more but the box to put it there in Sounds and Audio Devices Properties
is checked.

The Audio Tab shows the default device for sound playback and sound
recording is TotalRecorder, same under Voice tab (playback and recording). If
this should be changed, I don't know what to change it to. Choices are: Moden
#1, SoundMax Digital Audio, TotalRecorder virtual device, and Dell Movie
Studio Wave Device.

Under Hardware tab there are a bunch of devices listed and all reveal the
statement, "This device is working properly."

Any ideas?
