Problem remotely accessing files

P

Paul Crisp

I have a small peer-to-peer home network (2 x XpPro + 1 x XpHome). A router
(D-link 604+) links to ADSL and acts as the DHCP server. I bring home a
(XpPro) notebook which normally connects to a SBS2000 network in the office.
At home it mostly can't access the shared files on the other machines but
sometimes it can. I can't understand what's going on here and I hope you
guys might have some suggestions.

I am logging in to the notebook using my usual office ID. When I browse the
local network sometimes I see just the office domain (to which I cannot
connect except when I have a VPN connection up) and sometimes I see it and
the home workgroup.

When I can see the workgroup , selecting the 'main' home pc will
occasionally let me see the shared files but more commonly I get a
UIC/password dialog box. If I complete this using the same credentials I
logged on with, I get an error which says something like "logon
unsuccessful. The username you typed in is the same as the one you logged on
with. That has already been tried. A domain controller cannot be found to
verify that username".

Why is is insisting on domain login when it's a workgroup member and why
does it happen sometimes but not others?

Help would be appreciated.

Paul,

Try this out:

1) Logon as normal
2) Start -> run -> \\main
3) If it prompts you for a username and password, Put the one that you
normally logon with on main.

Any errors? Let me know.
