problem importing text or excel spreadsheet into Access 2002 or 2003

When attempting to import a txt file or excel spreadsheet into Access 2002
or 2003, the import wizard applet will only let you edit the title of the
first column; if you select other columns for editing, the first column data
remains in the edit fields no matter what column you select.

Anyone know the fix for this? A workaround seems to be to use the 'advanced'
button and modify them there but I am getting several finnicky (sp?) users
that are complaining about this. I just checked MS KB

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875252&Product=acc2002

and this was supposed to be fixed with OfficeXP SP3 but we have applied SP3
and it still exists. Problem is apparent in Access 2003 as well

Is there a working fix for this?

Hi, Mike.

If you re-read that KB article a little more carefully, you'll realize that
the problem was *caused* by Office XP SP3. There's an Office XP
post-Service Pack 3 hotfix available, but you'll have to contact Microsoft's
Product Support Services to get it. It probably won't cost you anything,
though. Check out the KB article about the hotfix here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=841365

Office 2003 SP1 just came out two weeks ago, but we haven't tested it yet to
see whether this particular problem has been fixed in Access 2003, but it
very likely is.

thanks for that very much. We hav plans to migrate the enterprise to Office
2003. While the KB does not have any such reported issues for Office 2003,
we are experiencing this in Access 2003. I would assume this should have
been fixed in 2003?

Hi, Mike.

You're welcome.

Unfortunately, the bug is present in Access 2003, as well. Office 2003 SP1
just came out two weeks ago. Perhaps the fix is in this service pack, but
we haven't tested it yet. When we do test it, I'll post back with the
results to let you and everybody else know.
