Printer Shared but not seen

Hi everyone,

I can't seem to get my laptop to see my printer that's connected to
my desktop.

Have a Linksys G router connected to my XP desktop. Have succesfully
shared the internet connection and files with my XP wireless built in
laptop. A friend also has come over with his laptop and shared both as
well.

So after all that the question is:
Why can't my laptop see my printer that is shared on my desktop? Seems
like I should be able to got to printers and faxes, add a printer,
click next on the first wizard box, select a the network printer
option. My options at this point are to:
Browse - When I specify "laser" for the priner's name I get an error
message saying I may have typed the printer' name incorrectly or the
printer is not connected to the network..

The next option is to specify the path like \\desktop\laser but when I
click next I'm prompted for a password. If I just hit enter the promtp
says hat I don't have enough credentials to access the printer and do
I wish to specify new credentials. This just means another password.

The last option is to connect to a printer on the internet and I'm
rasonably sure this isn't the option for me.

I have seen wireless print servers but that seems to be for setting up
he printer remote from the laptop or desktop.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Ron

Have you shared the printer? Go into printers control window, right click
on the printer and select sharing...

I assume you have a LAN setup and can access shared files on the desktop.
I also assume you have Shared the printer on the desktop.

If yes to both of the above, try installing a network printer on the laptop.
Add a printer and select network printer and then navigate to the printer on
the desktop. If both machines are XP, they will both use the same print
driver.
Good luck

Ready for a good laugh? I read your post, thank you, and went and
shared the printer on my desktop. More specifically the desktop of the
machine named "DESKTOP". Found it interesting that I couldn't name the
printer in the shortcut "laser" but "Laser" worked great!

So I went back to my laptop and setup a network printer as
\\DESKTOP\laser and that worked great.

Thanks for al th help,
Ron

Have you shared the printer? Go into printers control window, right
click on the printer and select sharing...

you can also type from XP command line of machine sharing printer:
net share
and verify printer is indeed shared.
