Primary/Secondary monitor setup

Current we run
Laptop: Alcom Designer 400
Win98 (4.10.1988)
PowerPoint 2000 (9.0.2716)

and find that the option of running a secondary monitor is not available.
We are planning to replace our laptop (probably with a Dell) and need to
know, definitively, what we need in the new laptop so that we load our
current PPT 2000 and run with a secondary monitor.
