Hi,

Right-click your connection under network settings, choose properties. Go to
the advanced tab, click on settings. You need to use the "add" button on the
services tab to open this port.

If you are using router, you will need to use your router software to open
this port and enable port forwarding to this machine.

First, something is wrong. A defragmenter should not ever require you to
open a port. Second, a quick Google for "O & O defrag" brings up a host
of warez and serialz sites, so I'd question whether you want to have
this on your system! Second, to open a port you would go to the
configuration of whatever firewall you are running and open the port
there. But I really think you should post back with what you are trying
to do because it certainly sounds like you've got some malware that is
trying to convince you to let it act like a trojan horse.

Why does a defrag utility have any need to access the net via an open
port?

O&O is not spyware. It also does not need, nor does it use, access to the internet.

The communication between the components of O&O Defrag (e.g. the Agent and the GUI) is based on TCP/IP. The idea is to allow it to be flexible and easily extensible so that administrators / system techs can purchase network licenses and use the MMC console to connect to remote machines within the LAN and defrag them without leaving their desks.

Even if you purchase the standalone 1 user edition this functionality is still basically the same. The application connects to itself internally over port 50300 via TCP/IP in order to function, but it does NOT access the internet. Most firewalls are programmed to recognize internal IP communication so you may / will probably receive a warning message if you have one installed.

You don't have to turn off your firewall, just open port 50300 TCP. O&O Defrag does not allow external access over this port even if you are connected to the internet.

I agree ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! As far as I'm concerned, "A defragmenter should not ever require you to open a port."

I ran this software (O&O Defrag Free 14.1) for just the 2nd time since it was installed. It did not ask me that before. This is the 2nd time I've run it and it asked me that?? Red flags everywhere.
