Chris

Hello,
A real quick description of my problem... I am in the
Navy, currently deployed in the Arabian Gulf. I ordered a
new notebook and received it, but Windows XP was not
activated. Simple enough? Unfortunately not, I cannot get
on the internet with that computer, can only access the
internet with the ship's workstations. Telephone, I cannot
use this option either our "sailorphone" is broken.
So how in the world can I activate windows XP before
the time runs out? I am desparate...

Thanks in advance
Chris

How did the OP originally "order" the new notebook?
Via the "internet"?
Via the "telephone"?

There are only two (2) methods to activate Windows XP:

1. Via the Internet.
2. Via the telephone.

Please refrain from criticism unless you can offer up
a viable solution that solves the issue. Sarcasm does
not help anyone and is unproductive.

Uhg, this is sort of ridiculous, I can understand they
would like to protect their "intellectual property" but I
can't even send an e-mail to a human being that works for
Microsft, I can't request support via the web because my
product ID has the 3 letters OEM in it. The manufacturer
of the laptop can't help.. So I'll have $2700 useless
dollars worth of plastic and silicon sitting on my desk
until I get back to the U.S. which is going to be a while.
This is just as bad as ITunes, can't listen to any music i
had previously downloaded because my computer is
not "authorized".. Ok ok /rant off..

Well thanks for the response

Maybe it was sent as a gift from a family member, friend, or just an
American trying to help make one of our soldiers lives just a little
more bearable, out in the hot wasteland of Iraq.

ROFL! Shouldn't you have thought of that before making this reply? You
offered someone, putting their life on the line for you and the whole
world, absolutely no help yourself, and are now criticizing someone for
pointing that out to you!

Well, are not currently using the internet to post to this newsgroup?
Simply take your notebook to your current location, establish an
internet connection, then activate!

I wish I could, but I would get killed for trying too hook
my personal machine to the Ship's LAN. That's a no no
here..

Visit your commanding officer, explain the problem to him,
and maybe he or she will suggest visiting someone in the ship's
IT department who can assist you.

Greetings --

Not significantly more than is using government property (the
ship's LAN) to conduct your personal business, which is what this
entire discussion is, technically.

Discuss the ship's appropriate authority (Domain admin? OU
admin?), and see if they'd be willing to help you out. I know that
the Air Force LAN managers at many locations in the theater of
operations are making allowances for the limited use of personal
laptops of deployed personnel.

Chris,

If you're unable to work out a way to activate with your CO or the IT people
involved, please contact me privately. I believe I can help.

Remove the obviously fake section of my e-mail address to contact me
directly.

If it'll get you to STFU and get you to start actually *reading*, then it's
productive as can be.

How about mail-order?

My criticism is offering a viable solution that solves the issue of you
not paying attention.

Offering useless "solutions" also does not help anyone and is unproductive.

A new notebook like that from any of the major makers ought to be
'activated' by having the system 'locked' to the BIOS on the
motherboard, and need no further action. So I am left wondering whether
what you are seeing is not a 'register with the maker' - for support
etc.

Check to be sure: if you run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
does it actually come up suggesting you 'Activate on the internet'?

The sad thing is, Kurt, I was not intending to be sarcastic to Carey at
all. A bit blunt, yes, but the advice I gave still stands. He needs to
pay attention, period. Hell, I don't know, maybe he has AADD?
