"Please wait while Microsoft Outlook Exits" - and wait, and wait, and wait...

Hi there,

On a computer in work (we have Office 2000 / Windows 2000), when we close
Outlook 2000, there is a small window that appears saying "Please wait while
Microsoft Outlook Exits."

The problem is that this window doesn't disappear! We've left the computer
for a good couple of minutes, but it's still there.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this problem, and how we can fix
it? It only seems to happen on this one computer, even though we all have
the same software and do the same tasks (in Word, Excel, IE, etc).

Thanks for any help, it will be appreciated.

Assuming you are on exchange server:

It's probably stuck on removing the deleted items from the mailbox. You need to set up a personal folder (.pst) and change the delivery options so email messages are sent to the user's personal folder instead of the actual mailbox. For some reason when Outlook tries to delete stuff that is in the "mailbox" instead of the user's personal folder, it locks up. This happens sometimes where i work, too, when a new user is added to Outlook and it doesn't create their personal .pst folder for some reason. Another option is to delete each email in the deleted items one by one (if you delete more than one at a time or try and move multiple items, it will lock up again) and then exiting.

I hope this works.. :)

Thanks for the reply :)

As far as I know, all our mail is on the Exchange server, and none of it is
on an individual computer. Last week, I logged onto my computer as her to
check her emails whilst she was on holiday, and all the email were there as
expected (so assume they are all grabbed from the server?).

It's very strange because nobody else seems to have this problem. I read on
Google about something to do with opening Word and Outlook at the same time,
but I'm not finding anything concrete about this.

Is there a way to 'defragment' the Exchange server at all? I can 'Compact
all Folders' in Outlook Express at home, so perhaps it's something on the
server?

Thanks for the help, it's appreciated.

Your exchange server defrags itself on a schedule
determined by the Exchange Admin. Use of any other
defraggers can damage the database.

I occasionally have this problem (invariably when I'm in a
hurry!) too. I just go to task manager and choose to end
program now. Haven't seen any detrimental effects of
closing it that way.

Hi Jeff, ending the task in the Task Manager is what I've been doing. But
my boss want 'a solution,' so I will keep looking around on this one to
please her.

Thanks,

Ste

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
