Pictures over video

I very much want to transition from Video, to stills, and
back to the video again. How can you float a picture into
the middle of a playing video?

Only way I can see to do it is to:
Split the video, copy the auto track and paste it to the
lower music track, mute the video's audio, and place
pictures inbetween the split.

So if the picture displays for 5 seconds, delete 5 seconds
of the returning video to keep the audio in sync. Wrong,
it is hard as heck if not impossible to get the audio back
in-sync with the returning video.

Anyone have a good trick to get pictures overlapping the
video/audio?

Easy as pie,

put a second copy of the video clip on the Music/Audio track. Then do what
you are doing and zoom into the timeline. Do the alignment using the sound
waves and you'll easily see a mis-match of one frame.

Use the Nudge feature to jog a clip left or right by one frame - it'll help
get it aligned.

Once aligned, you can continue with what you want to do.

Hope this comes across clearly enough

I've been using a similar, but slightly different,
technique, which works quite well. its a bit hard to
explain verbally, but i'll give it a shot.

so, you have a picture that you want to insert into a
video track, without interrupting the audio track. Heres
how i've been doing that. lets call the transition from
the video to your picture the "start point" and the
transition from the picture back to your video the "end
point". put your video on the timeline, and pause it
when you reach the "end point". now split the video at
that point. take the audio track from the first half
(and only the first half...) of the video and drop it
down to the audio track, then mute the audio track
associated with the video.

Now, trim the first half of your video back to
your "start point". Drop your picture in, between the
two video tracks, and blend/transition to your liking.
Extend the duration of the picture beyond your "end
point", then drag the second half (with the original
audio still synced to it) back to the end point. The two
audio tracks will meet up perfectly, without having to
manually nudge them.

If this isn't clear, let me know, and i'll try to get
some screen shots onto a website somewhere.
