Photo Editing in Windows picture and Fax viewer

G

Guest

I am trying to edit my photo in window picture and fax view, but every
photo I try to edit I get the message "This File does not have a program
associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the
file folder options control panel."
I tried to restore the view using ...Start / Run and type

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

thinking that would resolve the proplem but I still get the message "This
File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the file folder options control panel."
What do I need to do to be able to edit my photos. I should say it
happens to all my photos I have saved on my computer and they are saved in
disk "D" on a partitioned hard drive.
Any help woudl be great........Thanks

WP&F Viewer is not an editor...clicking the Edit
button will close the Viewer and the associated
editor will open.

Do you have image editing software installed
on your system? If nothing else...you should
have MS Paint...and here are links for a couple
of freebies:

FastStone Image Viewer
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Download Irfanview
http://www.techspot.com/download299.html
(get the plug-ins too)
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/472-irfanview-plugins.html

The following article explains how to set the default editor:

Change the default image editor
application, invoked from Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer

More info:

clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without
the quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will
see your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the path to your program choice:

"C:\Program Files\??????????\???.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax
Viewer but if you left click the Edit button...your image
editing program opens..

Good luck.

The only "editor" available with window XP is Paint. You can open Paint and
then the photo you want to edit. However, this Paint is very old and not
very good for doing anything. You can also right click on a photo and click
on Edit on the opening menu and the photo should open in Paint.

To edit your photos, download the free software from here:
www.faststone.org
and install it.
Very nice features and easy to use to edit photos.

Another free software is:
www.picasa.com
Also very nice and easy to use to organize and edit photos, but better for
organizing and finding photos on your hard drive than for editing.
