I'll have a little sleepy on it.....how does it work around a firewall,do you know, cos i'm still a little(a lot really) green about this firewall and general computer science in general. I'm a very fast learner though.

I'm using ESET and when boinc asked for permission I just clicked yes. Anything more complicated than that and one of the guys will have to assist.

What Firewall/Internet Security are you using...? My machine cruches 24/7 I use Kaspersky and have no issue with work units been uploaded and downloaded..To be honest I don't even know when they up and down load...Just get on with it and install it and JOIN the PCR Team...

How can i be sure that there's nothing untoward going on with this crunching lark? How can i be sure they aint swiping me spondulix when i'm not watching.

I regularly - that is to say every week - shop via the internet and have done so for about 8 years, and I have been crunching for only 2 years, WCG/BOINC hasn't compromised our security or made any difference to our online activities at all.

For my first few months of crunching, we used to be on dial-up and, I used a laptop protected only by ZA and AVG.

Currently, I crunch 24/7 on two rigs, one is Vista, which has Kaspersky Internet Security (anti-virus and firewall) the other is XP-Pro which still has Zone Alarm and AVG (wait for the howls of protest, because ZA and AVG are not popular here ;) but neither is Norton, so ...duck! :p) I connect through a Netgear router (wired) which has its own firewall, and just for "belt and braces" I have anti malware/spyware applications running too (such as SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, etc.)

I think it is natural to have a few qualms, particularly if you've not heard about WCG grid computing. But another place you could check-out, is the Forum over on the WCG website, PC Review has a thread over in the "Team" section of the forum, but there are loads of topics which might be of interest to you. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ click on the "Forums" tab at the top of the page.

Don't know whether any of that helped... but if not, then hey, it's been nice chatting :D

Just make sure that when the 90 days is up you get something decent like ESET NOD32 or Kaspersky ;)

I'd just like to second everything that TC has mentioned.

Crunching now for 18 months and NO problems whatsoever.

I have a wireless internet connection and use Kaspersky. I simply tell Kaspersky what to allow through onto the system. Easy :thumb:

I read an article in this month's PC Utilities where they did a comparison between several of the top security suites and guess what folks......Norton far outdid Kaspersky....well, by 2.5%. Now normally i dont read enought to believe what i read but hey(Not what horses eat) i was inclined to believe this having had both on my laptop recently. Not at the same time, mind. I found norton to be more user friendly....i found it hard to make head nor tail of Kasper and when i got it first i was well excited. Now i'm just not sure. WCG is lookin good at the minute......perhaps later on maybe.
Anyway i'd love to chat all day but i'm supposed to be workin.

Yep, Norton 2009 is a big improvement in terms of both speed and detection over its previous versions, and scores well with on-demand detection and as you say just beats Kaspersky - but it falls behind in terms of pro-active tests where Kaspersky scored 70% to Nortons 44%......these results come from av-comparatives.org a specialist independant AV tester ;)

That being said, theres nothing wrong with using Norton 2009, its just that I prefer to use one that has a recent history of good consistant performance.

Just what year was it Nortons lost the plot?

I had used Norton for years and it was good. Then some bright spark at Symantec decided to change it into bloatware and let the thing crawl all over your operating system like a poisonous wild vine.

And whilst concentrating on how pretty it looked it seems the Norton Team tended to overlook the one thing Nortons AV was made for - virus detection, lol

Musta been about 2003/2004 it all went wrong I'd guess.

I do hear Nortons AV 2009 is a big improvement on the last five years' versions but once bitten, twice shy....

Hi,
A distributed system may have a common goal, such as solving a large computational problem. Alternatively, each computer may have its own user with individual needs, and the purpose of the distributed system is to coordinate the use of shared resources or provide communication services to the users.

Thanks

Really? :D

Let's give due credit to Sukumar Ghosh then... because I believe it's his book Distributed Systems – An Algorithmic Approach where... ahem... we got it – through Wikipedia, apparently – verbatim.

Who let yet another spammer in?
