pc performance, wheres it gone ?

hello all
hope some one can help me with this, i have windows xp home with sp1, it used to load up quick before i updated threw windows update , since then the pc 's peformance has dropped heaps.... it takes nearly three minutes before all the systray icons appear and are able to be used, when it starts up i checked task manager to see whats running and everything is there but doesnt have any names next to them till after the three mins is up then everything apperas with the icons .. then im able to start connecting to the internet and do all the normal stuff...... it only happened after i updated xp any help would be appreciated

Try running Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter
