Partition Magic failure, exception

Keith

I have a Partition Magic failure that I need help with. Can anyone
help me with a fix. It appears that since Symantec has acpuired
Powerquest, there is no more help until they 'incorporate' PM into
their own software suite. thanks. kb

What I'm trying to do:
----------------------
.. move from a big OS hard drive to a smaller OS hard drive
.. avoid a a full XP install/build from scratch to move
to the smaller drive (just want to mirror big to little and be done)
. copy my XP OS hard drive that is on a 80gb hard drive, to a
smaller 20gb hard drive (13gb used on big, so fits easily
on smaller 20gb drive)
. then boot from the new XP OS hard drive, and free up the
80gb drive

Environment:
------------
XP
Partition Magic 7.0
primary hard drive = 80gb, one partition, bootable XP, FAT32, master
secondary hard drive = 20gb, one partition, empty,
unallocated/available space, FAT32, slave

Situation:
----------
ran PM 7.0
did the copy partition wizard (single partition), master to slave
did APPLY
calls for reboot
reboot occurs
PM 7.0 script begins to run to do the work
failure occurs, calls for diskette to write below exception data

Failure:
--------
Exception C0000005 has occurred at address 010BBF7C (0002AF7C) in
xmnt2001.exe.

.
Sounds like it's having trouble mounting the drive.
Did you reduce the size of the 80g partition first?
Reduce it to the actual data size (you said 13g?)+200mb
for overhead(so you can start it on the other hard drive).
Otherwise, it'll try to put 80g worth of info (mostly
blank) onto a 20g drive, and you'll get an error every
time.
One other thing you can do is to set your 20g as the
master on your secondary IDE channel. You'll speed up the
transfer and may avoid errors due to PM7 seeing two
primary active partitions...
Hope this helps...
