I do not know if the following fix will help but
it may be worth a try:

Before editing your registry...I suggest
that you carefully read the following article:

"MS Paint has encountered an error and needs to close"

Answer from David Shiflet:

This is a bug that will be fixed in SP2.

What has happened is that some registry
keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint
have somehow gotten out of sync.

If you open regedit to that key, you'll see various
keys named "General-Bar0", "General-Bar1",
etc. In the "General-Summary" key, you'll see
a value called "Bars". You can fix/work around
this bug by setting the Bars value to the number
of "General-Bar#" keys you have. For example,
my machine has 5 keys, numbered General-Bar0
through General-Bar4, so my Bars value in
General-Summary is 5.

Did you read the article that I suggested? You
can cause *serious* problems if you incorrectly
edit your registry.

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

It may be best if you wait for WinXP SP2 which
should be released sometime next year.

If you choose to proceed...

Go to...Start button / Run /
In the "Open" field...type...
"regedit" (without the quotes)

Press...Enter.

When your Registry Editor opens...
follow the previously posted instructions.

Good Luck.

I have the same problem, but it's working ok now.

Here is how I fixed:

Click on Start
Choose All Programs
Choose Accessories
Click Command Prompt

Now the Command Prompt Window Open
Type: Regedit
Follow to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint

Right mouse click and delete this line
Close Command Prompt Window
Run Paint Program.

It should works now.

Good Luck

Forgive me Mary but I would suggest that you
wait for Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you
are not familiar with the registry you could
accidentally cause some serious problems.
