Outlook security with Windows 98...

People that log in and check there email from Windows 98
and log off then when someone else logs into the network,
they can read the previous person's email.

It blew me away when I saw it happen.

How do I stop that.

Windows 2000 works perfectly and I have urged that people
upgrade to Windows 2000...

Is there a way to secure emails in Outlook 2000 on Windows
9x?

If you're using .PST files, they can be password protected. If the folder
list isn't visible in Outlook, click View | Folder List. Right-click the
root folder (usually "Personal Folders" or "Outlook Today"), click
Properties on the popup menu, click the Advanced button on the General tab,
then click Change Password. Be VERY careful not to forget the password, as
it is neither easy nor cheap to get back into the .PST file without it.

THen how does a person log into the machine and check
their email? The way I understand it is that the mail
applet in the control panel has to be set with the new
person's email address, correct?

I thought that the email was on the server, but it has to
be local otherwise people would not be able to read other
people's email...

Well, like I said, my instructions apply "if you're using .PST files". Do
you use Exchange server, or are the users using Personal Folders Files
(.PSTs)? Also, what version of Outlook are you using, and if 98 or 2000,
what mail support mode? If you're not sure, look at the second line of Help
| About Microsoft Outlook -- it should say "Internet Mail Only" or
"Corporate/Workgroup". (Outlook 97, 2002, and 2003 don't have separate
modes.)

Profiles. Setup up profiles under win98, in each profile
setup the mail client to connect with exchange.

It all depends on how you have your system set up, then. Some companies set
it up so all mail comes into the Exchange mailbox, but allows users to set
up local "Personal Folders Files" (.PST files) and move the messages into
those files, either manually or by setting up rules to act upon incoming
messages and divert them to the .PST. You will need to determine whether
these messages that others are reading are on the Exchange server or have
been moved to .PST files...then we can help you secure the data.
