I've got a similar problem:

Got myself a nice big 320Gb HD today, cloned the old drive onto the new
one, uber, not a problem at all, works perfectly, except...

Every single email I've got in Outlook isn't displaying properly. New
ones and old ones alike, some from POP servers, some from IMAP. All I'm
getting in either the preview pane or upon opening the email is a
single character, which varies from email to email, and can be anything
from "È" to "-" to "ô".

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, you name it. Tried to use
scanpst.exe, which turned up a few errors, but still nothing.

Hope we can find a solution, and sorry that I don't have an answer.

Found the problem - disable your email anti-virus scanner and your
emails should start arriving and sending as usual.

Disable "certify mail" in AVG.

After furious head scratching, (e-mail address removed) asked:

Are you running AVG and scanning mail with it? If so, disable the mail
scanning or at least turn off the "certify" option. You should consider
upgrading to AVG V7.5
