Outlook Outlook Express 6 does not open pdf files correctly

I use Outlook Express 6. If I have to open a pdf attachment it tries to use an old adobe 5 reader even though the latest reader is installed. If I save the file and then open it from there, the latest version is used automatically. Any ideas why OE ignores the default?
