Outlook 2007: "updating conflicts"

On installing Office 2007 SP1, Outlook checks email on start-up and then
shows "Updating Conflicts. This folder is up to date". It then refuses to
download new email from the exchange server.

I've tried new data files and deleting ost/pst's ... and the same happens
again.

Anyone have any ideas?

Outlook 2007 (12.0.6213.1000)
Vista Ultimate SP1

For any other readers falling into the same trap, "Updating Conflicts" means
"updating the Sync Issues/Conflicts folder" - of which I have 307,484
messages in, hence the hanging/freezing!
