Outlook 2007: cannot create .pst file

D

Dan

I want to create a new .pst file.

In accordance with Outlook Help:

1) I click File | Data File Management |
2) The Account Settings box pops up
3) I click Data Files | Add
4) In New Outlook Data File box I select Office Outlook Personal Folders
File (.pst) and click OK
5) In Create or Open Outlook Data File, I select the desired file and click OK
6) The box Microsoft Office Outlook pops up with the message "The requested
operation failed". No reason is given.

In step 5 the Help file mentions the box "Create Outlook Data File" (without
Open) with Name and Password fields.

Thank you for your help.
Dan

In step 5 there, shouldn't you be supplying a name for the new .pst file you
want to create instead of selecting one that's already there?

In step five there, you should be giving a name to the .pst file you want to
create rather than selecting one that's already there.

Dan

Thank you Kim.
Erratum: please read:
5) In Create or Open Outlook Data File, in "File Name" I enter a name which
does not exist in the \local\microsoft\Outlook\ folder

Sorry for the duplicate answers, I was having a system problem myself! :)

I didn't have any luck either trying to create a folder the way you outlined
here. I could, however, right click on "Inbox" in the folders tree and
select "New Folder" and create it from there.

Does that help?

D

Dan

That creates a folder not a .pst file.

Did you try Help>Office Diagnostics? Did you try a new mail profile? Did
you try this using the Mail applet in Control Panel while Outlook was
closed?

D

Dan

Diagnostic found no problems. I also ran Repair, nothing changed.
The Mail Applet is missing from the Control Panel, thus, no way to create a
new Profile.

Are you using 64 bit Vista? If so, you have to enable the 32 bit Control
Panel before you'll see it.

Thank you very much Brian, I found the hidden Mail applet and it worked.
I am now able to create new archive files.

What is still unsolved is a problem which I reported in another thread: the
File|Archive function does not work even with a newly created profile.

Indeed the fields "Archive items older than:" and "Archive file:" are reset
tp the same old values after I click OK.
Thanks again, Dan

Did you try creating an entirely new mail profile?

D

Dan

Yes. The new profile behaves like the old one.
In the meantime I trasferred the pst file to another Vista computer (x86)
where I did the archiving. The fact that it worked there excludes the
possibility that the behaviour is due to the main pst file.

Hey! Thank you so much for this post. I was fighting with this issue all day until I found your conversation and the solutions to my issues. Thank YOU! The 32 Bit Mail Control Panel worked where Outlook could not.
