Outlook 2003 won't retain password/Microsoft fix for this fails.

Outlook 2003 on an XP Pro machine with one account will not retain the
password.
I have followed the Microsoft "fix" for this problem exactly (and
repeatedly) to no avail. I have also uninstalled/reinstalled Outlook 2003
and Service Pack 2. I have removed the user in question (the only user) and
reentered him. The Key is recreated, but does not seem to retain the Outlook
password (or if it does, Outlook
cannot "recall" it... the "retain password" box is still checked, but the
password field is blank). Any suggestions?

For what type of account? Recreated the mail profile already?

What used to work before has changed. Don't know yet what Microsoft
changed. One day maybe I'll dig around in the transport logfile to see why
Microsoft is spewing SMTP commands when there are no pending outbound
e-mails in Outlook.
