ordered the X2

A few weeks back i had posted here as i was thinking of building an X2
system.

after doing careful research i decided to order all the parts
from monarch computer.(i'm getting the X2 3800)
i then waited several weeks to see if the price would drop...
and it did by about $30 ...so i quickly ordered.

of course i forgot to check the freight options...
and ended up blowing my savings on express freight.

Oh well, I wanted it right away anyway, didn't I? <G>

To put things in perspective...
even though it will be about $1000...
My girlfriend paid $1600 for her P-75 with 8 megs of ram...
about ten years ago!

Awesome. Im planning on getting mine maybe next week too though it
depends on some other things. I might go for the opteron 165.
All the tech forums seem to be buzzing about the opteron but I was
initially put off by it cause I didnt know much about it and thought
it might be weird or something. But reading up on it I guess its the
same as the Toledo core dual X2s .

The only sucky thing about it is AMD seems to be taking advantage of
it and raising prices on the Opteron cause of the popularity and
lowering the price on the X2 3800 now I guess to get everyone to buy
the 3800. If they start jacking the price of the opterons then Ill go
for the 3800 as I originally planned.

With all he benefits Im looking at the X2/opteron as a must have chip
now rather than the luxury I was thinking it will be.

The way things are going the last two months if I get it , my
motherboard will catch on fire an hour later.

Considering that I've been building all my machines from spare parts...
the 3800 is going to be a very BIG step up!!!!

I think you may still have a few more days before the Opteron
is going up...
But don't wait too long!

The official MS news site for WindowsXP x64 is:

msnews.microsoft.com

microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general

It's worth taking a look. There are references to hardware, drivers,
programs, etc.

Thanks.
when I get the machine I'll be using XP 32 bit
and dual booting with the 64bit version until I get any issues figured out.

That's why i prefer dumpster diving...
but the X2's don't seem to be too plentiful in the trash yet.
Right now I am using a discarded p-IV !!!!

That must be a rich neighborood to dump P4s.
Usually the only PCs you see on the curb are 486s etc stuff you
wouldnt in your most desperate dreams want to use nowadays.

I just ordered the 3800 X2 couldnt resist cause it was so low $240 !

My luck seemed to turn now. It fell right into my lap right when I was
thinking of ordering either today or tomorrow. And 240 is way way
cheaper than the current $330+ Opteron prices so it was no contest.

I don't live in a rich neighborhood (but I tell folks that I live within
walking distance of a good neighborhood)
I live in an area where there are a lot of college students so I find
quite a few P-I p-II and even an occasional p-III being tossed out...
but the P-IV was a real fluke.
It was just the mobo, cpu and case...but it was *brand new*
of course the catch was that i needed to buy the RDRAM!!!
Were it not for ebay ...the price for new RDRAM prob would have had me
putting it right back in the trash!

Well considering that I have at least some of the parts already..
the 3800 X2 system will be under $1000... But the new printer we wanted
will not be comming any time soon!!!!!
