Operating system is not found

I have eMachine T1105 running Windows XP Home with SP2. This computer was
working when suddenly I got a blue screen saying that Windows was shut down.
Since it was the first time, I did follow the suggestion and restarted
computer. However, on boot I got the message <Operating system is not
found>... I tried to restart in the Safe mode unsuccessfully. Is there
anything I can do to get this machine running again?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Check all internal connections, make sure the hard drive is detected in the
BIOS, make sure you have no CDs/Floppy Disks in the drives..
Try again..

Then consider taking it to a technician, as your hard drive/controller/other
may have died.

Shenan,
thanks for a quick reply! The first thing I did, I checked the drives. Sure,
there were no disks... Also, I checked all visible and reachable internal
connections. But how do I make sure the hard drive is detected in the BIOS?
May you please instruct me?
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

The text from the blue screen might help tell what went wrong, but offhand
I'd speculate that the hard drive died. I would run a drive diagnostic tool,
these are generally available from the web site of the manufacturer, and run
from a bootable floppy or CD. It will tell you the state of the drive.

Hello

This happened to me a short while ago too. I found out that my har
drive had failed.

I got the "no operating system found" error message, and was told t
try putting in my operating CD by my manufacturer, when I did this, i
said my hard drive had failed. I had my hard drive replaced as it ha
totally broken. Maybe you have the same/similar problem

Rick, I had a similar incident last week. It was on an ancient 486pc.w/Win
3.1.
I finally was looking to make sure the HD was wipped before putting it in
recycle bin. Mine said Battery died and BIOS was empty (or somethng like
that). So for me that was kind of good news since the pc had been collectig
dust for about 7yrs<g>.
I am curious as to what would have happened had I gotten a new battery?

Probably would have worked. If you had set the settings correctly each power on it would also have worked. A modern computer would have worked with or without a flat battery (old computers required a human to select something).

Rick,
sure the text could say, but it's gone with the first screen and now I'm
getting no screens at all... As I remember, at the bottom it said something
about atapi and the errors like x0000007 or similar... Not much... I'll get
a diagnostic tool and see what happens.
Thanks for your suggestions.
