Operating System doesn't respond PLEASE HELP

Chris

I had recently tried to install Norton's Systems Tools on
my Windows 2000 Professional and the install had stopped
responding during install. So I terminated the
installation process and after that happened Windows does
not respond at all. I cannot restore my active desktop,
start menu, nothing. How can I get this out of my computer
and restore windows if my system doesn't respond? Also
after starting my computer when it first boots up to enter
the setup and I want to enter the setup mode, it asks for
a password that I never put there to begin with. How can I
get rid of this password to access my setup????

First, don't do that -- I have personally seen Norton mess up more
machine than any virus I have personally seen, and it just interferes
with my systems too much.

Good change that rebooting, F8 and choosing last known good
will work (Norton won't be listed in the registry of the LKG).

But first, try F8-safe mode and uninstall (or manually delete the files --
probably better is to rename the NORTON directory so it can't be found
but you can change your mind later.)

"Setup mode"? Win2000+ doesn't have such a mode. It has Recovery
Console which needs the MACHINE ADMIN password.

It might display "Install new hardware dialogs" etc. but this is not a setup
mode.

Use F8 -- not recovery mode for this problem (initially anyway.)
