Opening file causes bogus err msg that file is already open

I'm running XP Home on a new eMachines box & running
Office 97. Whenever I open an excel file (for instance
foo.xls on my desktop), an window opens up that says "A
document with the name "foo.xls" is already open......
After I click OK, everything seems to work fine.

Same kind of thing happens with Word & Wordpad files
although the error message in those cases is slightly
different (i.e. "C:\...\foo.doc is being used by XYZ. Do
you want to make a copy?)

This drives me nuts. Any deas whats going on?
Thanks

Hi Jack

This are the usual things to fix this

Tools>Options>General uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1 ) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
(unregserver is not always needed)
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

Thanks for the help!
Reregistering excel (& winword) solved the problem.
Thanks again!
