OFFICE SP3 Causing Problems in FP2002 ASP's on UPDATE

G

George Smith

Hi There,

Just installed SP3 on my PC and its causing all sorts of
problems, firstly all the database retrieves that used the inique ID to
target a record started failing with Database Results Error, checked
Microsofts Knowledgebase and found an article about using a number in any
database query. The fix was to amend the database sql query and ensure that
any numeric values using the Database Results Wizard were set to a value (ie
0 - zero) in the More Options section. OK this seemed to sort the
retrievals but the updates are still failing, an example of the sql is
below, really simple (or so I thought)

UPDATE DISTINCTROW
hints
SET hint_title='::hint_title::',
description='::description::'
WHERE id = ::id::;

The above query worked before installing SP3, I have set the id value to 0
as recommended in MS KB but still failing with the following message,
hint_title, description and id are all passed into the ASP page by the
calling ASP and I still gte the error:

Database Results Error
The operation failed. If this continues, please contact your server
administrator.

hint_title, description and id are all passed into the ASP page by the
calling ASP.

I have created a test page using ID as a parameter in a retrieval and it
works fine using SELECT but not UPDATE .... any help or advice would be
appreciated.

Regards

George

Run the detect and repair feature for FrontPage.
With your web closed, FrontPage toolbar > Help > Detect and Repair.

Steve,

Many thanks for the input, ran the Fix and Repair,
unfortunately it did nothing the problems still persists. Guess I will just
have to wait while others start hitting this problem and maybe then it may
get addressed or someone might stumble across a solution. In the meantime I
am gtoing to re-install FrontPage.

Just to add and for information. Re-installing frontpage didn't help
either. Oh well back to the drawing board and searching the net I guess.

George - I have a similar problem with FP 2002 (in a different thread in
this newsgroup). I also tried uninstall/reinstall of just FP 2002 and
then a full unintall/reinstall of all of office xp with no change in the
results.

I'm guessing there is a registry setting or file somewhere that isn't
cleaned up with unintall/reinstall but haven't found it.

Good luck

Lionel,

Yes I have also uninstalled the full office pack too, this
is really getting to me know. I checked the delete query and that is
throwing the same error, someone at MS wants their bumps feeling at for
this one. It has got to be a major problem with many people and I cannot
see why more people are not jumping about with this. Oh well fingers
crossed we can get it sorted soon.

It is possible that MS isn't hearing a lot because people aren't using
FP or they haven't installed SP3 or both. Unless there is a resolution
soon my guess is that I will join the group using non-MS products.

George,
This seems to be a rare occurrence, but I have seen another instance of it
posted in a non Microsoft news group.

Also I have the service pack installed and have both FP2002 and FP2003
installed and have been running them both simultaneously trying to induce
errors and have not been able to create any. !!

This is what I would try: ( this is coming from me alone and not from
Microsoft )
Uninstall FrontPage
Reinstall Office and SP3.

Go to http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm and download the free utility
named RegSeeker. It's in a zip file. Unzip it to a folder on your desktop.
Open the program and run the "Clean the registry" function. It is going to
find loads of stuff. This is normal. Make sure "Back Up before deletion" is
checked, then click Select all and then right click in the window and select
Delete. Then under the Histories section select: Clean StreamMRU/Streams
keys. ( it will automatically save and back up these entries )

Then, close RegSeeker, Reboot and then reinstall FrontPage.

Let me know what happens.

ps: I use RegSeeker on a weekly basis.

Steve - as part of the uninstall/reinstall process I ran easycleaner
(similar to regseeker) to clean things before the reinstall and had no
success in changing the symptoms.

thanks for the thought - i hope it works for george

I've used EasyCleaner and been a ToniArts fan for years.
Also used to use RegVac
However, I've got to say RegSeeker does a better job, and the reason I
mentioned it is for the feature that cleans the streams and stream MRU
section. If you haven't used it recently, you might want to check it out.

obtw and don't shoot me for asking,..... you did reboot before the
reinstall??

I just downloaded and installed RegSeeker. In a comparison with
EasyCleaner. Regseeker found 579 entries while EasyCleaner found 5.

I think I'll switch to RegSeeker. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll try an uninstall/regseeker/install tomorrow when I return to the
office and have access to the Office XP cd's.

Thx

Steve - I can't explain it but after I ran RegSeeker I then rebooted and
tried FP2002 and it works the way it used to.

????

Thanks for solving my problem.

There must have been a bogus registry setting somewhere that was borking FP.

Awesome.
I hope George read my suggestion.

Also because it worked after a reboot it tells me it's a problem the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section of the registry because changes to it don't take
effect until a reboot, where as Current_User normally only requires closing
and reopening a program.

If you still have the backup file RegSeeker made, would you mind zipping it
and emailing it to me. I would like to forward it to the programmers to
help them find the cause of the problem.
